Who Tughans Are
Tughans is one of Northern Ireland’s largest commercial law firms, headquartered in Belfast, with over 125 years in business and regular recognition from leading legal directories.
Background
Tughans wanted a practical, interactive AI training programme tailored to how legal teams work day to day.
The focus was building firm-wide capability so staff could apply AI appropriately in existing workflows.
The Problem
Generic AI training would not have been enough in this context. Legal work involves sensitive information, strict professional responsibilities, and a high bar for accuracy.
Staff needed clear guidance on where AI can add value, where it should not be used, and how to work safely within legal and professional constraints.
The Objective
Build firm-wide confidence and practical skill in using AI for legal work, with clear standards for safe, responsible use aligned with legal and institutional constraints.
What I Delivered
I worked with Tughans to design and deliver an in-person training programme tailored to the firm’s legal context.
Sessions combined briefing components with facilitated practical exercises, where staff could apply the guidance in representative legal scenarios.
Some of the areas the programme included were:
- AI capability and limitation awareness: Understanding where AI can and cannot be relied upon in legal work.
- Practical workflow application: Applying AI tools to common, information-heavy legal tasks.
- Responsible use principles: Applying data-handling, validation, and professional-judgment standards before relying on outputs.
Outcome
Tughans completed a firm-wide training programme with practical application focus and clear risk-awareness.
- The sessions received positive feedback across the firm.
- Staff found the training useful in day-to-day legal work.
- The programme gave teams a clearer shared approach to evaluating where AI tools are appropriate and where human review should remain central.
“Liam has been a pleasure to work with and really knows his stuff in the AI space.”
